You might think you know where you\u2019re headed, but following an idea often takes you down paths that don\u2019t resemble what you first imagined. How do words and images live together in your process?<\/h4><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They move back and forth. Writing becomes images; images turn into writing. Neither feels complete on its own. Some images hold a moment that wants to become a story; some stories collapse into a single, fixed image. These are the strays I let in.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How To Let The Wrong Thing In began as two separate works made weeks apart: an image of a dolphin rising high enough to see both the sun and the moon at once\u2014an impossibility\u2014and a poem written elsewhere, at another time. The title arrived last. When it did, I realised the image had been describing the poem all along. They were circling the same idea, looking for each other.<\/p><h4 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your titles often feel like fragments of poems or unfinished questions. When do they appear?<\/h4><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes before, sometimes during, sometimes after. Some titles are poems. Others are questions or small stories. The image alone is never enough; the title works alongside it, opening a space for meaning rather than closing one. How does that shape the way you let meaning remain open in your work?<\/h4><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideas don\u2019t stay where you put them. They wander. They return when they want to. A stray might pass through once and never come back. If you\u2019re lucky, you learn how to sit still long enough for it to trust you.<\/p><h4 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your practice moves across digital painting, photography, and hybrid digital forms. What has working digitally given you?<\/h4><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I learned to draw, sculpt, and photograph very young\u2014those skills came early, and easily. Digital work didn\u2019t. It took years before it felt natural. But once it did, it opened a way to bring everything I already knew into one place. I don\u2019t think in terms of mediums anymore. Do you think of your images as emotional landscapes rather than stories?<\/h4><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think of them as pauses. A moment held open. What do they hold for you?<\/h4><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animals feel like reflections of ourselves\u2014our temperaments, our instincts, our ways of loving. I\u2019ve tried to let both cats and dogs appear in my work. That Cat People Know Their Love resonated enough to be shown in the UK probably says more about how people feel about cats than about any intention of mine. It was one of two self-portraits I submitted; the other, more overtly political, belongs to a different body of work.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34217 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/visualartjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Pear-Dropy-Where-Did-The-Colour-Go-When-You-Closed-Your-Eyes-2025.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1050\" height=\"590\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visualartjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Pear-Dropy-Where-Did-The-Colour-Go-When-You-Closed-Your-Eyes-2025.jpg 1050w, https:\/\/visualartjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Pear-Dropy-Where-Did-The-Colour-Go-When-You-Closed-Your-Eyes-2025-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/visualartjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Pear-Dropy-Where-Did-The-Colour-Go-When-You-Closed-Your-Eyes-2025-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/visualartjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Pear-Dropy-Where-Did-The-Colour-Go-When-You-Closed-Your-Eyes-2025-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/visualartjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Pear-Dropy-Where-Did-The-Colour-Go-When-You-Closed-Your-Eyes-2025-600x337.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1050px) 100vw, 1050px\" \/> Pear Dropy | Where Did The Colour Go When You Closed Your Eyes | 2025<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How To Let the Wrong Thing In<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To belong is not always to match.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some ideas arrive<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dressed in the wrong season<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carrying nothing<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but the ache of becoming.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You try to make sense of them\u2014<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but sense was never their goal.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They knock,<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not to be recognised,<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but to be allowed.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll want to close the door.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll feel the itch to tidy,<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to align,<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to mute the note<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that doesn\u2019t harmonise.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But leave it.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let the discord echo.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let it shift the space<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between what you thought<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and what could be.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not every thought<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will stay.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not every vision<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is meant to fit.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But some will grow wild<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the corner of your mind\u2014<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turning light<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">into colour<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you would never have chosen.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s the thing<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about letting the wrong thing in.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It teaches you<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what right never dared to become.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Where do you live: London, UK Describe your art in three words: Dare.
